And now it\u2019s coming for me, in an attempt to shame me into silence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Here\u2019s what happened:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"desktop-nativo mobile-yieldmo inline-ad \" data-inline-ad-count=\"2\">\n<div id=\"foEYhf1bDHte6s\" class=\"wrapper clearfix full pb-feature pb-layout-item pb-f-ads-nativo\" data-pb-name=\"Nativo Ad\" data-pb-curated=\"curated\" data-pb-id=\"unnamed-feature\">\n<div id=\"1353\" class=\"trb_ar_nt\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Last week, with violence spiking around the country, I wrote a column on the growing sense of lawlessness in America\u2019s urban areas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">In response, the Tribune newspaper union, the Chicago Tribune Guild, which I have repeatedly and politely declined to join, wrote an open letter to management defaming me, by falsely accusing me of religious bigotry and fomenting conspiracy theories.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Newspaper management has decided not to engage publicly with the union. So I will.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">For right now, let\u2019s deal with facts. My July 22 column was titled \u201cSomething grows in the big cities run by Democrats: An overwhelming sense of lawlessness.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">It explored the connections between soft-on-crime prosecutors and increases in violence along with the political donations of left-wing billionaire George Soros, who in several states has funded liberal candidates for prosecutor, including Cook County State\u2019s Attorney Kim Foxx.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Soros\u2019 influence on these races is undeniable and has been widely reported. But in that column, I did not mention Soros\u2019 ethnicity or religion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">You\u2019d think that before wildly accusing someone of fomenting bigoted conspiracy theories, journalists on the union\u2019s executive board would at least take the time to Google the words \u201cSoros,\u201d \u201cfunding\u201d and \u201clocal prosecutors.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">As recently as February,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/politics\/2020\/2\/20\/21146269\/george-soros-kim-foxx-bill-conway-states-attorney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">the Sun Times pointed out roughly $2 million in Soros money\u00a0<\/a>flowing to Foxx in her primary election effort against more law-and-order candidates.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">In August 2016,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2016\/08\/george-soros-criminal-justice-reform-227519\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Politico outlined Soros\u2019 money supporting local DA races\u00a0<\/a>and included the view from opponents and skeptics that if successful, these candidates would make communities \u201cless safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">From the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/billionaire-soros-funds-local-prosecutor-races-1478194109\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Wall Street Journal in November 2016<\/a>: \u201cMr. Soros, a major backer of liberal causes, has contributed at least $3.8 million to political action committees supporting candidates for district attorney in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, New Mexico, Texas and Wisconsin, according to campaign filings.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/george-soros-prosecutors-reform_n_5af2100ae4b0a0d601e76f06?guccounter=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Huffington Post in May 2018 wrote about contributions from Soros and Super PACs to\u00a0<\/a>local prosecutor candidates who were less law-and-order than their opponents.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">So, it seems that the general attitude in journalism is that super PACs and dark money are bad, unless of course, they\u2019re operated by wealthy billionaires of the left. Then they\u2019re praised and courted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">All of this is against the backdrop of an America divided into camps, between those who think they can freely speak their minds and those who know they can\u2019t.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Most people subjected to cancel culture don\u2019t have a voice. They\u2019re afraid. They have no platform. When they\u2019re shouted down, they\u2019re expected to grovel. After the groveling, comes social isolation. Then they are swept away.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\" data-item-type=\"depthscroll\" data-item-id=\"depth_scroll_middle\" data-item-number=\"middle\">But I have a newspaper column.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">As a columnist and political reporter, I have given some 35 years of my life to the Chicago Tribune, even more if you count my time as an eager Tribune copy boy. And over this time, readers know that I have shown respect to my profession, to colleagues and to this newspaper.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Agree with me or not \u2014 and isn\u2019t that the point of a newspaper column? \u2014 I owe readers a clear statement of what I will do and not do:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">I will not apologize for writing about Soros.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">I will not bow to those who\u2019ve wrongly defamed me.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">I will continue writing my column.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">The left doesn\u2019t like my politics. I get that. I don\u2019t like theirs much, either. But those who follow me on social media know that I do not personally criticize my colleagues for their politics. I try to elevate their fine work. And I tell disgruntled readers who don\u2019t like my colleagues\u2019 politics that \u201cit takes a village.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Here\u2019s what I\u2019ve learned over my life in and around Chicago, what my immigrant family taught us in our two-flats on South Peoria Street:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">We come into this world alone and we leave alone. And the most important thing we leave behind isn\u2019t money.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">The most important thing we leave is our name.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">We leave that to our children.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">And I will not soil my name by groveling to anyone in this or any other newsroom.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">The larger question is not about me, or the political left that hopes to silence people like me, but about America and its young. Those of us targeted by cancel culture are not only victims. We are examples, as French revolutionaries once said, in order to encourage the others.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Human beings do not wish to see themselves as cowards. They want to see themselves as heroes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">And, as they are shaped and taught to fear even the slightest accusation of thought crime, they will not view themselves as weak for falling in line. Instead they will view themselves as virtuous. And that is the sin of it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"crd clln--it\" data-type=\"text\">\n<div class=\" crd--cnt \">\n<p class=\"\">Those who do not behave will be marginalized.
